On the third day after surgery, the bruising and swelling start to get better. Some patients feel comfortable driving on this day but others feel their vision isn’t quite back to normal yet. The stitches are removed between the fifth and seventh day after surgery. This is when patients often note mild itching as the wounds continue to heal. The bruising and swelling continue to improve and are largely resolved two weeks after cosmetic eyelid surgery. The incision itself is usually a pink color at this point and is hidden in the eyelid crease. It continues to fade for up to six months after surgery. Very mild amounts of swelling can take this amount of time to resolve as well, especially in smokers.
Patients often ask when they can go back to work after Blepharoplasty and like most things in medicine, it depends on a few factors. Of course everybody heals differently with different levels of bruising and swelling. If one needs to look close to normal before they can return to work then it may take two weeks. On the other hand, those who can work with a somewhat bruised appearance sometimes go back to work within 4 or 5 days. Dr. Ebroon offers surgery on Fridays so that weekends can be incorporated into the healing schedule as much as possible.
Once the stitches are out, female patients can then carefully apply makeup. This and a dark pair of sunglasses can go a long way in allowing one to be up and about quickly after cosmetic eyelid surgery. Those that have a very important business meeting or social engagement should allow four weeks of healing just to be safe.
Most people can start to enjoy their results about a week after Blepharoplasty. This is especially true because the benefits will last for years!
